This is a relatively new offshoot of endoscopic urology that involves making small incisions in abdomen for surgery on the kidney (for kidney removal-nephrectomy, for kidney cancer removal—radial nephrectomy, laparoscopic pyeloplasty, etc. ) and less commonly for bladder and prostate. It requires a totally different skill set and special training as compared to endourology but benefits for the patient are substantial. Robotic surgery is a part of laparoscopic urology, but it is still quite expensive and in the hands of expert laparoscopic urologist, the benefits are the same.
Traditionally, till 25 years ago, many urological procedures were being done by open incision. It involved large incisions on the abdomen and back, which has many disadvantages. Since first laparoscopic nephrectomy( kidney removal) was done in 1991, many such surgeries are being done laparoscopically.
The benefits to the patient are tremendous, in the form of markedly reduced pain, avoidance of abdominal incisions and faster return to normal activity . Laparoscopic urological procedures performed include laparoscopic kidney removal( nephrectomy), laparoscopic kidney cancer removal(radial nephrectomy) laparoscopic pelviureteric junction obstruction correction ( pyeloplastsy), to name a few.
